Keyword research is the first vital step in your Search Engine Optimization campaign. If keyword research is done right, then you have set a solid foundation for your SEO campaign that can drive positive results to you in terms of improved keyword positioning and increased ROI. If keyword research is done wrong, then whatever efforts you put, time you invest, tactics you follow, everything will go in vain.  An effective keyword research is very much essential to set your SEO track right.

Create a list of keywords

You have to create a list of keywords that you feel is apt for your services or products. This list may include many potential terms that are practically searched by users for finding your products or services online. Ignore more generic terms like ‘toys’, ‘dress’, ‘shoes’ etc..Choose terms that are most relevant, but not very commonly used terms.  You can spend some time in competitive research to find out the terms what your competitors are targeting. You can also get keyword ideas from related searches in Google search.  For example, if you want to find related keywords for your photography blog, you have to just type the keyword ‘’photography’’ in Google search and your related keywords are displayed at the bottom of the search page.

You can also use Google Suggest providing the synonym and related words suggestion for every keyword you type in the search box.

You can find long tail keywords with different combinations using keyword merge tool. Expand your keyword list with all possible keywords relevant to your niche.

Use a Reliable Keyword Research Tool

Now you have a long list of keywords and it’s crucial to filter the list. Filtering keywords should be based on the number of searches and competition. You have lot of keyword tools to do the work for you.  Google keyword tool is easy to use, reliable tool for keyword research. It determines the performance of each and every keyword in your list, making your filtration process easy.  Enter the selected keywords list in the word or phrase field in Google adwords keyword tool, select the location for which you are optimizing your site and select “Exact’’ from the match types in the left hand side column for more accurate data.

Keyword tool fetches the data for number of global searches, local monthly searches and competition. Global search is the number of searches throughout the globe for a keyword. Local monthly search is the number of searches in the selected location. Competition is based on the number of sites targeting the keywords. If more sites target a keyword, competition is high. Now, its time to filter the list of keywords based on competition, global searches and local monthly searches. The keywords you choose should have high searches with either medium or low competition. High competition keywords usually have high searches and it’s really very tough to fight for them. Get the top 10 or 15 keywords you want to focus for your website. Remove the keywords that have no relevant content in your website or have them and create relevant content in your site. You can’t have irrelevant keywords in your list. Choose targeted keywords rather than generalised ones. They can definitely increase your conversion rate. For example: If you sell ‘’toys’’, it will be very effective if you choose targeted keywords like “wooden toys’’ and ‘’educational toys’’ rather than a generic keyword choice like ‘’kids toys’’.

Blend Keywords

You have come up with a potential set of keywords. You may find majority of keywords already in some areas of your site, while some are missing. Try to blend those keywords in your site. Create relevant categories or write relevant articles in your site based on those keywords. Make sure the main keywords are found in the important areas in a page including Meta tags and description, where you can get the maximum benefit.

Monitoring Keywords

Check the search engine ranking position for the filtered keywords and have it for future reference. Monitor the position after you start optimizing the terms or run a successful SEO campaign, you can very well realise the difference not only in the keyword position, but also in terms of traffic and conversion.  Keyword trends vary frequently, so you have to keep track of your important keywords and make necessary changes if required. Do effective keyword research and stay ahead of your competitors. Good luck!
